The Season of Singing

has Come

Dimensions: 600mm x 600mm x 40mm

Materials: Copper mesh, vitreous enamel, variegated cotton thread

As I watch spring arrive in my suburban garden and see new life bursting from the dormant earth, I reflect on the winter spent in hibernation; secluded and separated, hoping for a time we can once again participate in community and embrace our loved ones.

This set of 9 enamelled copper mesh ‘plates’ are placed alongside one another on a wall, with a design found embroidered onto a vintage traycloth - a floral tribute flowing from one plate to the next speaking of connection and fellowship, that we are not complete until we join with those around us. Referencing generations of households that adorn their home life by placing crockery on the wall to admire and beautify, these plates ground the viewer within the domesticity sphere, celebrating the familial and elevating the humble plate to a precious object.

The blossoming of roses and lilac, embroidered onto the enameled plates reminds me of the spring that inevitably follows winter, and the hope that is found in the promise of the changing seasons.   As I wait within the home, to see what changes are in store for us, I look to the flowers and trust that we too will soon be able to bask in the springtime of our community and those we love.
